PASADENA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Energy Storage North America (ESNA) today announced that Robert Powelson has been recognized as an ESNA 2018 Policy Champion Award winner for his innovation and leadership in energy storage and positive impact on the energy storage industry.
"I am honored to receive Energy Storage North America's Policy Champion Award," said Powelson. "During my tenure with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the Commission removed barriers to the participation of energy storage resources in the markets operated by Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs) and Independent System Operators (ISOs) through FERC Order No. 841. The order is tangible evidence of the Commission’s commitment to fair and open markets. It also speaks to the potential of energy storage and the benefits it can provide to the grid and, more importantly, to consumers."
Powelson is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Association of Water Companies (NAWC). Prior to joining NAWC, Powelson served as a FERC Commissioner. He was nominated to the FERC by President Donald J. Trump in May 2017 and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 4, 2017. Commissioner Powelson came to FERC from the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission, where he served since June 2008, including as Chairman from 2011-2015.

“The individuals we recognized with this year’s ESNA Awards have made significant contributions to the growth and maturation of the energy storage industry, thanks to their dynamic leadership, visionary policies, and commitment to improving the electricity sector,” said Janice Lin, Energy Storage North America Conference Chair. “We offer them our sincere congratulations and gratitude for opening doors in the North American and global markets and leading the transition to a cleaner and more resilient grid.”
The National Association of Water Companies (NAWC) represents regulated water and wastewater companies, as well as ones engaging in partnerships with municipal utilities. NAWC members provide 73 million Americans with safe and reliable water service every day and have an exceptional record of compliance with federal and state health and environmental regulations. Ensuring this high standard of quality requires extraordinary amounts of capital investment. NAWC estimates that its six largest members alone are collectively investing $2.7 billion each year in their water and wastewater systems. To learn more about NAWC, visit www.nawc.org.
